The War Years

When Britain marched off to war in 1914, their Canadian colony marched with it. The city’s population and economy saw a significant drop from 1914-1916, and only the plentiful resources of the countryside prevented utter collapse.

Edmonton wouldn’t see significant improvement until the 1930s, when the airplane and air freight industries matured. Pioneering pilots such as Wop May would apply their flying and organizational skills honed in the Great War to develop supply lines between Edmonton and the gold- and uranium-rich North, cementing Edmonton’s place within Canadian aviation history
